Klimt

It focuses on Klimt’s eternal search for perfection, eroticism and love, his tireless hunt for a new form of expression, his rejection of the social and artistic zeitgeist.

Marketa Lazarova

Adapted from a pre-war novel by the avant-garde writer, Vladislav Vančura, Vláčil's film deals with the conflicts between the rival mediavel clans of the Kozlíks and the Lazars, and the doomed love affair between Mikoláš Kozlík and Marketa Lazarová. Interwoven with all this is an evocation of the conflict between Christianity and paganism. Marketa Lazarová was voted the all-time best Czech movie in a prestigious 1998 poll of Czech film critics and publicists.

Is it possible for anything beautiful to happen in a landscape of war and death? Can life go on? Is it possible to realize that death does not exist?
